Lake Garda
Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and is about two hours from Milan.
Its charm is unquestionably linked to the villages and towns that line its coast and which are connected by a road that runs all around the lake.
There is so much beauty, that it is hard to choose a favourites:
Let’s start from the western shore with Limone sul Garda, an ancient fishing village and today one of the most popular tourist centers. Do not miss an excursion along the new cycle path overlooking the lake, admire the lemon trees, olive trees and the ancient restored lemon greenhouses.
Gardone di Riviera called the garden city. We recommend to visit the Vittoriale (Gabriele D’Annunzio’s house museum) and the Botanical Garden of the Andrè Heller Foundation, containing plants from all over the world.
Not far away we find Salò, its name is linked to Benito Mussolini who formed the Republic of Salò right here. Today it is a place rich in history and culture, characterized by the Cathedral and the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria as well as having a simply gorgeous lake wlak and some fine dining in the local restaurants.
Let’s move on to the south side where we find Sirmione, the pearl of Lake Garda, excellent for regenerating the body and mind in its famous thermal waters. But those who stay in Sirmione cannot fail to visit the fairytale Scaligero Castle and the Grottoes of Catullus. Finally, we suggest that you reach the Island of San Biagio known as the rubbish island, it is up to you to determine why!
Peschiera del Garda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also located on the southern side. It was a real fortress city of the Republic of Venice, the still visible fortifications enclose the city center.
As for the eastern shore, Laziese is unquestionably one of the most beautiful villages. It is rich in history and impressive architecture including the Scaligero Castle.
Finally, the northern tip of the lake is dominated by Riva del Garda. Here you can try your hand at sporting activities, relax on the equipped beaches and visit the Alto Garda Museum.
